The Dummy’s Guide to Buying a PC

Buying a PC isn’t always easy, especially when computer jargon is involved! There are so many different things to understand, and it’s important to understand them before spending money on your PC!

We’ve written a guide to explain things to make your PC purchasing experience a lot easier to understand and so that you can find the perfect PC for you!

Processor

The processor is a piece of hardware that enables your PC to interact with all the applications and programs that are installed on it. They are the brains of the computer and keep everything together. Some examples of processors are the Intel i3 and Intel i5 that most of our new and refurbished PC’s include.

The Intel Core i3 and Intel Pentium are great processors for completing everyday tasks on a PC such as basic productivity, spreadsheets and browsing the web. If you’re looking for a bit more of an advanced processor for gaming performance, we’d recommend at least the Core i5 or Ryzen 5.

RAM

The RAM (random access memory) is the PC’s short term memory. This is where all your applications are stored on the computer. It stores all the information and data that your computer is constantly using so that it can be accessed quickly when needed. You will find that the PC’s on our website come in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB to suit everyone's different data needs. We would recommend purchasing a PC with at least 8GB RAM for everyday use such as office work.

SSD

The SSD (solid state drive) is where all your storage lives such as apps, files and the operating system. SSD is a replacement of traditional hard disks and uses a flash based memory. They’re much quicker than hard disk drives and they boot in seconds rather than minutes. They’re also much more power efficient!

Graphics Card

The graphics card produces the image that you see on your screen! There are two types of Graphics cards, integrated and dedicated. You will find that our PC’s come with integrated graphics cards which are perfect for the day to day use of a PC such as using it for work. The dedicated graphics cards are usually much more powerful and offer more performance, ideal for gamers!

For gamers, we would recommend the Palit GTX1660 SUPER StormX 6GB graphics card. This graphics card features a dedicated hardware encoder that unlocks the ability to game and stream simultaneously with superior quality. The SUPER graphics cards are optimized for your favourite streaming apps to provide maximum performance for your live stream.
