  • Comparing Intel’s Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 Processors

Intel’s Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs are dominating the PC market, but, which processor is right for you?

Simply put, a Core i7 is better than an i5, which is better than a Core i3. However, looking into their individual specifications makes matters a lot more complicated.

    Number Of Cores and Threads

As you would expect, the Core i7 has more cores than its predecessors, ranging from four to eight cores. Meanwhile, the Core i3 has three cores and the Core i5 have four.

Essentially, the more cores there are, the more data the CPU can handle, and therefore, the more tasks or threads your PC can work on simultaneously.

Intel also have an advanced technology called Hyper Threading that enables each core to serve multiple threads. So, a standard eight Core i7 processor could run sixteen threads simultaneously, a Core i5 processor could run 8 cores simultaneously and a Core i3 processor could run six cores simultaneously.

Unfortunately, older Core i5 CPUs do not support hyper-threading, and therefore, one core can only run one thread. However, newer i5 CPUs, such as the Kaby Lake 7400 CPU, now support hyper-threading. So, if you choose a Core i5 CPU be sure to check the specification to see if it supports this advanced technology.

Overall, the capability of Intel’s Hyper Threading technology to increase threads across all its core processors is key for the avid gamer looking to complete multiple tasks quickly and simultaneously.

    Cache Size

When you use the same data continuously, your CPU stores this data in its cache to help improve the speed at which it can complete tasks. So, the larger the cache size, the better.

The Core i3 has 3-4MB of cache, the Core i5 3-6MB and the Core i7 4-8MB of cache. The Core i7’s far superior cache is ideal for PC users looking to complete repetitive tasks faster.

    Clock Speed

At first glance, the Core i3 appears to have a faster clock speed than both the Core i5 and Core i7.

However, unlike the Core i3, the Core i7 and i5 both benefit from Intel’s Turbo Boost technology.

Turbo Boost increases the clock speed of CPUs when you need more power. This dynamic feature means that your CPU can draw less power, and usually produce less heat, by only running at a high speed when it needs to. So, although the Core i3’s base clock speed may appear higher, the Core i5 and i7 actually outperform it once Turbo Boost is taken into account.
