  • Fallout 76 Game Review - The Pros and Cons

    fallout-76-pip-boy

    OPEN WORLD

It's important that a game world doesn't feel too small, but world's that are massive tend to be tedious. But Fallout 76 seem to have sidestepped this issue. The addition of CAMPS (Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform) encourages group exploration and makes it almost addictive.

The first game objective is to track down the Overseer. She plays the important role in guiding you through the main story and overcoming the surprising events along the way.

The endless extra events and activities may lead to gaps between story mission. Holotapes are recordings of past happenings that players can find all throughout the game, that tell the brunt of the story.

    THE FIGHT

Gunplay and combat are best described as functional at best.  However, this weakness is compensated by the wide range of weapons you can find, craft and modify. This works because it gives you the incentive to explore to find new resources.

Multi-player now works in real-time, and continues to help players line up shots for more effective combat. This system can be upgraded so that more areas on enemies can be targeted.

Players can fight other players at any time, which opens the risk of experienced players griefing newcomers. You must be level 5 before you can fight, or be targeted by other players. Plus, there is a bounty system in place to identify who has murdered who. Murder "one-sided combat that ends in the death of the passive participant".

You won't lose your stuff to some random player who's killed you, and death also doesn't set your character's progress back.

    fallout-76-e3-17

    TEAMWORK

Fallout 76 definitely promotes teamwork. It's designed for up to four players in mind, with the odds of surviving better together! You don't have to stick to your group, as you can venture off and then fast travel back to your teammates (which is a very convenient and liberating feature).

Everytime you level up, you get rewarded with perk cards where you can get abilities and unlock passives. Perk cards can be upgrades, and shared among your group. The abilities include boosts to the effectiveness of stimpacks and much more.

If you work together, each group member can focus on upgrading different abilities so each player brings different passives to the group. Teams can also band together in settlements.

There is no friendly fire in the game, so during an intense combat session, you don't have to worry about your peers.

    CONCLUSION

Fallout 76 feels like the sequel to Fallout 4! It's definitely not an entirely new experience, but instead a familiar one translated to multiplayer.

    Pros:

    • Fun gameplay
    • Rewarding group play
    • Survival-combat setting is fun
    • Fast travel back feature
    • Enemy's - Lots of variety in the NPCs
    • Plenty to do!
    • Perk card system offers lots of customisation
    • Large and varied map
    • Character progression - diverse cards

    Cons:

    • Graphics could be improved
    • Other players can easily ruin your session
    • Story is uninteresting
    • Frame rate not great
    • Story missions are easy to forget about
    • Bugs!!

  • Black Ops 4 Blackout PC Review

Featuring the first Battle Royale mode of the popular game series, Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4, Blackout had a lot to prove. Would it follow in Fortnite's successful footsteps who also followed the Battle Royal genre? Or, would it disappoint existing Call Of Duty fans? Find out in our Black Ops 4 Blackout PC Review.

    black ops 4 pc review

    The Plot

88 players parachute onto the expansive map, collecting equipment and weapons and fighting opponents to become the last player standing. Sounds pretty standard.

However, the attention to detail in the maps, characters, weaponry and graphics is where Blackout really comes into its own.  In fact, Blackout steps apart from its competitors almost instantaneously with the ability to quickly drop from your helicopter, as opposed to waiting, rather impatiently, in the sky, as  on Fortnite.

    The Maps

Perhaps one of the most standout features of Call Of Duty, the maps on Blackout are truly something to behold. The maps showcase the most popular maps from the Black Ops series such as Firing Range, Cargo and Asylum. These have been adapted to fit the battle royale genre whilst still keeping their original charm.

The result is that everything from the cities to the sightlines feels individually handcrafted, interesting and unique yet simultaneously familiar and welcoming. A far cry from the copycat, traditional battle royal experience of hiding behind trees and fighting across sparse landscapes, the maps on Blackout provide a vivid player experience that former battle royale games, like Fortnite, fail to deliver. Add to this the nostalgia these maps provide for seasoned Call of Duty players, and the experience is one that cannot be rivaled.

    Equipment & Controls

As you would perhaps expect from a Call of Duty game, the arsenal of weapons available in Blackout is extensive, practical and detailed, making them fun to use and ensuring every piece of equipment found is a new favourite.

Unlike other battle royale games, Blackout has improved the clunky, one-dimensional control properties when it comes to equipment use. Perhaps one of the best equipment advancements is the ability to fire your weapon while simultaneously using other equipment, or even operating vehicles.

Despite these revolutionary battle royale improvements, Blackout sadly falls short during the product inventory. The inability to display more than one weapon at a time, the inability to drag or re-position items or ammunition on PC and the inability to pick up items based on proximity makes for a clumsy and frustrating player experience that sadly tarnishes the weaponry, no matter how good it looks.

    Graphics

Unlike its battle royale competitors, Blackout was not released as an early access. As a result, the graphics are clean and the frame rate is consistent. When played on a high-end PC, such as the Core i7 7700 Kaby Lake 7th Gen Gaming PC 4GB GTX 1050 Ti Windows 10 Pro 16GB, the graphics and attention to detail is second to none and far surpasses Fortnite.

    acoolcsquartzblue_1 Core i7 7700 Kaby Lake 7th Gen Gaming PC 4GB GTX 1050 Ti Windows 10 Pro 16GB - £819.96

    Characters

The advancements in characters and action on Blackout is one of the most standout developments of the game.

The ability to fight while using vehicles, shoot whilst swimming and heal whilst moving, as opposed to standing still, are revolutionary features that make the game last longer, allow you to explore more advanced techniques and tricks to overall create intense, fast paced fights that break the typical plot of battle royales.

    Our Thoughts

Overall, Blackout has managed to combine the dynamic battle royale genre with the familiar, creative detail of the Call Of Duty series to deliver a polished, enhanced game that rivals its competitors. Yes, there are sadly a range of technical issues on PC, and yes, as Call of Duty goes, the game is relatively slow pace. However, this doesn't discount that the game is fast paced for the battle royale genre. Nor does it take away the joy that comes from playing an outstanding battle royale experience that is combined with one of the most well-developed, innovative gaming series or the immense sense of achievement you feel when, if ever, you actually achieve the last man standing title.
