  • Spring Clean Your PC!

Whether you’re using your PC for work or gaming, it can attract a surprising amount of dust and dirt that can cause your PC to overheat, run inefficiently, loosen components and break down thermal paste. Cleaning your PC can be a daunting task and could damage your PC if not done with care. That’s why we’ve put together a list of tips to help you safely and quickly clean your PC so you can get back to gaming!

    Fan Filters

Even a small amount of dust on your fan filters can result in higher temperatures and a reduced component life. In time, this can also cause negative air pressure, meaning your PC’s fans suck air into your case through any open crevice further damaging components and reducing life span.

To prevent this simply lightly vacuum the dust and debris from fan filters and any other vents.

    External Surfaces

This is the area you’re most likely to notice dust and debris, and therefore the area you’re likely to clean on a more regular basis. Gently wiping down external PC surfaces with a lightly dampened cloth is enough to clean most PC’s of dust and dirt.

Be careful not to use a high-chemical cleaning product to avoid staining your PC and refrain from spraying any liquid cleaner directly onto your PC as this could clog your PC system.

    Inside Your PC

Although your filters will most likely block most dust and debris, some can reach the inside of your PC. To remove this dust, you can again lightly vacuum. However, be gentle and use a low power setting taking care not to dislodge, and lose, any small parts.

If dust remains after a light vacuum, you could use canned air to dislodge any stubborn dust, use a small brush to manually remove it, again taking car with delicate parts, and finally use a microfiber cloth to remove any flyaway small fibres or stubborn grime.

Top Tip: Try to shoot the canned air in the opposite direction to the fan’s airflow to avoid dust spreading cross your PC and into vital components.

    Cards and Cables

Removing, quickly cleaning and re-inserting your PC’s cards and cables is a great way to avoid the build up of dust in any ports and prevent cards from dislodging over time.

Although cleaning your PC may be the last thing on your mind, regular cleaning pays off, helping to optimise cooling, performance and stability so you can keep gaming for longer!

  • Which Graphics Card Should I Buy?

Put simply, your graphics card is like the heart of your PC, pumping pixels from your tower onto your screen, so, if your graphics card isn’t quite up to speed your whole PC and gaming experience is going to be affected. But, what should you really be looking for in a graphics card?

Our great range of Graphics Cards start from £34.99. Our great range of Graphics Cards start from £34.99.

    Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) Type

Graphics cards have a dedicated video memory and a graphics processing unit (GPU) which can handle any number of different calculations like lighting surfaces and mapping textures whilst producing millions of polygons.

Most graphics cards use AMD, Intel or NVidia, all of which perform well. However, matching your GPU with your processor or chipset is ideal for maximum compatibility. So, an AMD CPU pairs perfectly with an AMD graphics card, while a NVidia chipset works best with a NVidia graphics card over AMD or Intel.

    GPU Clock Speed

On average, the higher the number, the faster the GPU, which is exactly what you want when playing high-speed, first person shooter games. However, other factors will also play a factor in the speed of your Graphics Card, so it’s worth considering the specification as a whole, not in isolation.

    Memory Bandwidth

Measured in gigabytes per second, Memory Bandwidth is the speed of your RAM. More memory bandwidth means you can draw faster and higher quality images.

Memory bandwidth is calculated by the memory clock, type and width. The most common memory type is DDR, Double Data Rate, which essentially transfers two memory values for each memory clock cycle.

Again, memory bandwidth, although important, is best combined with other features to get the best performance graphics card.

NVidia CUDA Cores and AMD Shaders

Although NVidia’s Cores and AMD’s Shader have different names, these respective technologies essentially work out how to shade 3D objects and how to show light affecting them so that images look as realistic as possible on screen.

In gaming especially, the more CUDA cores or Shaders the better, given the importance of graphics and Frames Per Second (FPS).

    Compatibility

As graphics cards slot into the motherboard’s PCI Express (PCIe) slots, it is vital to check there are slots available on your motherboard and that they support the maximum PCIe version and card width.

It is also advisable to check your power supply connector, card dimensions and resolutions supported, number of monitors that can be plugged in and the port, either HDMI or DVI, on the card itself.

Expertec’s PC’s come with the latest graphics cards installed and we also sell a great range of graphics cards so you can have the best gaming experience!

AOC E2470SWHE 23.6 Wide TN LED Monitor £111.99 AOC E2470SWHE 23.6 Wide TN LED Monitor £111.99

    Size:

Relatively self-explanatory, and one of the first things people will look at. If you use your monitor occasionally for short periods of time and perform largely basic tasks, a small screen is more than adequate, however, for gaming or multi-media tasks, a larger screen is preferable so you can see more and work or play better.

    ASUS VS228DE 21.5 Wide LED Monitor £91.99 ASUS VS228DE 21.5 Wide LED Monitor £91.99

    Refresh Rate:

For work or basic tasks, a lower refresh rate of 50Hz is fine, but, for avid gamers, a more rapid response rate is preferable, allowing you to maintain a fast pace in first person shooter games.

    Panel Type:

The two types of LCD display panels are IPS and TN. IPS offers good colour accuracy, an ideal feature for multi-media users. Although lacking the colour accuracy of IPS, TN are considerably cheaper and have a short response time allowing them to refresh quickly. This makes them ideal for high-speed gamers who don’t want anything to slow down their game.

    BENQ GL2250 21.5 Wide LED Monitor £96.99 BENQ GL2250 21.5 Wide LED Monitor £96.99

  • Ryzen vs Intel Processors

For years, Intel processors have dominated the PC market, but, thanks to AMD’s Ryzen processors, this could be about to change. Here, we consider some of the main benefits and pitfalls of Ryzen in comparison to Intel.

    Cores and Threads

A thread is a sequence of related instructions, and most modern CPUs can manage two threads per core. The Ryzen 3 1200 starts with four cores and four threads, the Ryzen 5 1600X is a 6-core, 12-thread processor, while the Ryzen 7 series at the top of the scale features 8 cores with 16 threads.

All of the above Ryzen processors rival the number of threads and cores featured in Intel’s CPU’s, however, Intel have focused on improving the speed of their cores rather than the number.

So, what does this mean for gamers and PC users?

    Gaming vs Surfing

Despite having more cores and threads, Intel keep improving the speed of their cores meaning Intel’s CPUs deliver higher frame rates than the new Ryzen processors, and, higher frame rates are currently better for games, meaning Intel’s Core i5 or i7 still dominate the gaming world.

However, for those looking to game whilst also surfing the web, streaming and creating content, then the new Ryzen processors offer improved performance compared to Intel’s CPUs, meaning the real results are dependent on what you use your PC for, and where you’d like optimum performance and speed.

    Efficiency and Price

Ryzen CPU’s function with lower power consumption and cooler temperatures, meaning your PC can run more efficiently and economically.

Adding to this, most Ryzen processors are cheaper than Intel’s alternatives, while Ryzen’s new products have resulted in Intel slashing some of their prices to compete with a more competitive market.

Whether you prefer Intel or Ryzen, this added competition from Ryzen’s new CPU’s is likely to result in lower prices, new, advanced CPU’s and a more exciting gaming market competing to produce the best hardware to take gamers to another world.
