Ryzen vs Intel Processors

For years, Intel processors have dominated the PC market, but, thanks to AMD’s Ryzen processors, this could be about to change. Here, we consider some of the main benefits and pitfalls of Ryzen in comparison to Intel.

Cores and Threads

A thread is a sequence of related instructions, and most modern CPUs can manage two threads per core. The Ryzen 3 1200 starts with four cores and four threads, the Ryzen 5 1600X is a 6-core, 12-thread processor, while the Ryzen 7 series at the top of the scale features 8 cores with 16 threads.

All of the above Ryzen processors rival the number of threads and cores featured in Intel’s CPU’s, however, Intel have focused on improving the speed of their cores rather than the number.

So, what does this mean for gamers and PC users?

Gaming vs Surfing

Despite having more cores and threads, Intel keep improving the speed of their cores meaning Intel’s CPUs deliver higher frame rates than the new Ryzen processors, and, higher frame rates are currently better for games, meaning Intel’s Core i5 or i7 still dominate the gaming world.

However, for those looking to game whilst also surfing the web, streaming and creating content, then the new Ryzen processors offer improved performance compared to Intel’s CPUs, meaning the real results are dependent on what you use your PC for, and where you’d like optimum performance and speed.

Efficiency and Price

Ryzen CPU’s function with lower power consumption and cooler temperatures, meaning your PC can run more efficiently and economically.

Adding to this, most Ryzen processors are cheaper than Intel’s alternatives, while Ryzen’s new products have resulted in Intel slashing some of their prices to compete with a more competitive market.

Whether you prefer Intel or Ryzen, this added competition from Ryzen’s new CPU’s is likely to result in lower prices, new, advanced CPU’s and a more exciting gaming market competing to produce the best hardware to take gamers to another world.
